Experience the oldest Tennis tournament in the world

As one of the four major Grand Slam events of the year and the oldest Tennis tournament in the world, Wimbledon is the only major competition to still be played on a grass surface. Held at the All England Club in the Wimbledon region of the UK capital since 1877, the tournament is played over two weeks during late June and July.

The club and indeed the competition itself are both steeped in colourful history. One of the most iconic traditions is the strict dress code for staff and ball girls/boys. The traditional Wimbledon colours are dark green and purple, however, Tennis players are required to wear all-white or nearly all-white – some colour accents are permitted as long as a recognisable commercial brand logo is not prominent. The tournament also has a policy of disallowing commercial sponsorship advertising around the courts – one of the few left in the world to do so.

Due to the temperamental English weather, a retractable roof was fitted to the prestigious Centre Court to lessen the amount of play lost due to rain. This was met with much controversy with fans questioning whether this would harm the electric atmosphere of the 15,000-capacity crowd around the court.

This year you could be there too. Tickets are allocated in a ballot which is drawn months before the competition to allow fair distribution to fans. Local schools and nationwide Tennis clubs also have the opportunity to attend.

For those who cannot attend, many fans flock to ‘Murray Mound’ (named after the current British No1 men’s single player) a grass hill outside the main venue where large screens show the matches for free. Lie out on the grass and soak up the atmosphere while sipping on some iced tea or snack on strawberries and cream from the nearby vendors. Complete coverage of the tournament is covered on television by international broadcasters, showcasing live each day of the competition so you may be fortunate enough to be filmed sitting in the crowd.
